The Maldives is an archipelago consisting of 1190 coral islands. It is located in the Indian Ocean, southwest of India. Two hundred islands are inhabited and 88 islands are fully equipped as tourist resorts.
The largest island of the Maldives is only 5km². In addition, there are only 9 islands larger than 2 km²!
The Maldives is best known as a real honeymoon destination. The tourist areas are equipped with very expensive resorts and you will feel isolated from the rest of the world.
Only since 2008 has the law allowed guesthouses to be run for tourists on local islands. We visited the Maldives with our backpack and stayed on three different local islands. Watch and read more below!
